SEPARATION BASES

The set was ordered by a customer from Germany. His wish was to make the bases for the T + A Criterion TAL140 tower speakers. According to the preliminary assumptions, they were to fulfill a purely aesthetic function, which, however, has changed over time.
The appearance of the bases has been roughly defined, but there was some freedom in terms of the finish. The final price was an important factor, which immediately forced the consideration of the best solution within a given budget, while complying with the client's requirements.
The bases were made, as desired, as a two-table, separable structure. the basic element and at the same time the assembly base for the whole is a massive basis made of 38 mm HDF board. Its upper edges have been milled with a 45-degree chamfer cutter, mainly for aesthetic purposes. As a finish, it received a chemically hardened, two-component polyurethane black matte lacquer.
The main table top, on which the columns were ultimately placed, is a 30 mm thick longitudinal medley of solid MAHOGANY / SAPELLI type which was given finish of a hard, polyurethane gel varnish and a hand-rubbed polish based of de-waxed orange shellac.
Both MAHOGANY tops are separated by distance discs 44 mm in diameter and 8 mm high, made of turned solid brass. In order to cover the mounting holes and the screws connecting the entire base, the lathed brass decorative plugs were put in the holes under the HDF basis.
The whole structure is supported by a specially designed set of adjustable massive spikes. Each weighing 200g, with a total diameter of 34 mm and a height of 55 mm. They were also made of solid brass just like the spacer discs.
Additionally, each spike is equipped with a base plate with a centering recess to protect the surface on which it stands. All spikes have been additionally polished to a satin finish and secured with a mixture of waxes for patina protection.
